Dealing with Bird Behaviour

For hundreds of years people have been keeping birds as companions. Our inability to match our expectations with our birds’ capabilities have long led to misunderstandings and conflict between birds and people, often with disastrous results.

To assist you in both understanding your bird’s behaviour and in the ‘training’ of your bird, the West Toowoomba Vet Surgery has been fortunate in enlisting the aid of Barbara Heidenreich. Barbara has been a professional in the field of animal training since 1990.

She is the author of “Good Bird! A Guide to Solving Behaviour Problems in Companion Parrots” by Avian Publications and also “The Parrot Problem Solver: Finding Solutions to Aggressive Behaviour” by TFH Publications. She is also the producer of the Good Bird Parrot Behaviour and Training DVD series.

She owns and operates a company, Good Bird, Inc., that provides behaviour and training products to the companion parrot community. These products include Good Bird Magazine, books, videos, and training/behaviour workshops. Barbara has provided behaviour workshops and/or animal training presentations at the Association of Avian Veterinarians conference, The American Federation of Aviculture conference, The International Parrot Conference at Loro Parque, Parrot Festival, The International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators conference, American Association of Zoo Keepers conference, Association of Zoos and Aquariums conference, The Parrot Society of Australia conference and many more.

She is the past president of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators and has been on the Board of Directors since 1997. Her expertise has been utilised by the US Dept. of Agriculture, Fish and Wildlife Service and numerous international professional organisations. In the past 4 years she has met and trained over 600 parrots at her workshops.

It is our hope that this series of articles will give you a better understanding of your bird’s behaviour and help you to find solutions that will allow a comfortable and mutually respectful relationship between you both.
